J1 style A cutaway Black Walnut

Some builders and players don't know a lot about Walnut, so you don't see a lot of guitars built with it. When it's used, it's often the figured California Claro variety. The Claro looks great and it's plenty fine, but the good stuff is aged and quartered American Black Walnut. The degree and type of figure in the wood is usually less showy than the Claro, but the density and stiffness is usually much better and gives a stronger tone overall. Coupled with a good Sitka spruce top it can give a nice strong fundamental tone the way good maple does.
